ESi was retained to investigate damage to a rail tank car and subsequent release of hazardous materials resulting from a derailment. A post-accident, 3D laser scan of the tank exterior, and interior was used to support the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) investigation. The scanned images and metallurgical analysis were used to verify the mode of crack initiation.
ESi has since been retained as the program manager and technical adviser to the Advanced Tank Car Collaborative Research Program, aimed at reducing hazardous materials transportation risk. Industry associations, the Department of Transportation, the Department of Homeland Security, and Transport Canada sponsor this program.
