ESi was retained to perform a study on the degradation of HDPE piping resulting from exposure to the disinfectants used in potable water. This involved a literature review of the topic and a laboratory investigation on pipe samples from water districts throughout the country. The investigation showed that oxidation of HDPE pipes may be a problem in certain instances. The data generated included profiles of oxidation through the thickness of the pipes using micro-FTIR spectroscopy, as well as other analytical and mechanical tests.
